Groups call for minister to scrap disabled school idea. The Vancouver Sun (Mar 16, 2007)

VANCOUVER - A coalition of groups representing the disabled wants Education Minister Shirley Bond to scrap the idea of separate schools for disabled kids.

The groups have written to Bond to say separate schools will only isolate children with disabilities, cutting their chances of mixing with the mainstream.

The groups say it's important and healthy for normal children to learn how they should behave with children with special needs.

The groups say instead of diverting funds to open segregated schools, the Education Ministry should concentrate on providing "special education" in regular schools.

The concept of segregated model schools, introduced in February's throne speech, has sparked much debate, with some people welcoming the move and others calling it a step backwards.
