The First Show Part 2

Posted on: 25 September 2006 by Steve Paikin

Continued from Part 1

The rest of the week looks pretty strong as well. Stephane Dion will join us for the full hour tomorrow night for an in depth discussion on his leadership platform, plus the status of his Liberal party. Martin Short, who next to my father is the funniest guy I know in this world, leads off Wednesday's show. We talk about the occasionally powerful and occasionally silly combination of celebrities and politics. I've known Martin since I was a kid (we're both from Hamilton). We taped this interview last week to accommodate his insane "eight shows a week" Broadway schedule. I have never seen him more thoughtful and interesting. The interview brought out a side of my old friend I had never seen before.

Thursday, producer Wodek Szemberg is putting together a full edition special on whether Toronto really is a world class city or just a weak imitation. Those who both love and hate Toronto should enjoy that one.

And, of course, our meat and potatoes at TVO over the years has been provincial politics and we'll conclude the week with a look at where we stand in this province, politically, with just one year to go before the next election. Dalton McGuinty's Liberals and John Tory's Conservatives are tied, with Howard Hampton's NDP in a more competitive position than at any time in the past 15 years. It should make for a fascinating year in politics. Our Queen's Park bureau chief Susanna Kelley is producing that one and I'll post more on that later in the week.

Okay, gotta go. Research beckons. Talk to ya tomorrow. Hopefully, see you tonight at 8 on TVO.

The Pilot

Steve,

I enjoyed the interview with Lord Black. If he's ever going to win over public opinion, he'll have to do more interviews like this one, rather than snapping at reporters on the street corner. I always have my handy dictionary at my side when listening to this erudite gentleman. Great panel for the war discussion. I do, believe that five panelists maybe one or two too many. It seems that often one or two get left out. It's good to see Eric back. Any chance or reuniting Richard, Eric and Janice in the near future. Janice is just as insightful and sharp as she was fifteen years ago lecturing 400 students in Con Hall. Keep her...always. Stephane Dion for a full hour tomorrow....ZZZZZZZ. I'm sure Conrad and many other Liberal faithful will be glued to the set. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Dennis

Bravo for first show

so glad to have you back Steve

Excellent discussion on afghanistan - missed the conrad black - will catch it at 11

first comments: Please minimize the distracting bottom-of-screen CNN like graphics - irritating as hell.

More importantly drop the split screen with speaker making a point on one side and only slightly relevant live action (troops, guns, airplanes) on the other is simply distracting - let us see the faces of the other participants reacting if you want to use a split screen. We are here for the discussion, not the pictures. Pictures we can get on every other news show.

thank god for TVO - I'm very excited about this show.

New Show

Congratulations on the new show; it looks good so far - very ambitious. I'm pleasantly surprised to see Eric Margolis back; he has a lot of experience, thinks for himself, and provokes the other guests to (try to) defend their usually more conventional positions. His combination of informed, independent thinking and passion makes for a more stimulating exchange than we've seen recently. The Conrad Black interview was interesting as well I look forward to more shows, though I'll miss the special combination of Paikin and Todd, if that's not on the agenda any more.

Agenda - Show #1

Steve Paiken always delivers and the first show of the Agenda was informative and very enjoyable; more so than any other show available on Canadian TV. I did not appreciate the split-screen parts; too confusing. Eric Margolis, it is very nice to hear your comments again, welcome to The Agenda. Janice Stein is a human being before anything and then she is well informed; a living Canadian treasure. David Bercuson - I think the air pollution in Alberta is getting to his brains but he was very funny in an scary kind of way. Thanks Steve for a very enjoyable show. I am looking forward to Stephane Dion and his comments tonight. The Agenda promises to be the "Must See" show of Canadian TV.

Bravo Steve!!

Bravo Steve!! My wife and I watched your new show "Agenda" Monday night and we were delighted to see Eric Margolis back as a member of your panel. We missed him very much when he was not on Studio 2 . Eric brings realism to Middle East issues and does not shirk from telling matters as they really are unpleasant as this may sound to some

When I saw this louis vuitton, I couldn’t wait to share with you. This bag might look like a bit of throwback, but as long as you don’t pair it with an outfit made entirely of 50s-appropriate garb, there’s no reason that it can’t look sophisticated and modern. The lv look is going to be huge for fall, and a handbag is a great way to incorporate the idea without having it take over your entire wardrobe. Soft, smooth leather are the obvious attraction on this louis vuitton handbags, and the limited hardware and lack of external pockets and zippers make the muted color really stand out in a way that it might not on another bag. The neo-Speedy shape is a Louis Vuitton classic, and they’ve done an admirable job of updating it for people that may not have cottoned to the brand’s offerings from the pervious several seasons.
