Halloween Wrap-Up and Cold War Films

Posted on: 02 November 2009 by Thom Ernst

We heard from a few voices this past week, some expressing disappointment over the fact that our Halloween double feature offered something other than traditional horror films, and a few - like our friend Randy - who expressed his appreciation for finally being able to see THE MACHINIST.

The truth is we love Halloween at Saturday Night at the Movies and most of us are pretty hip when it comes to genre films. Ignoring Halloween was not our intent. Adding something different than what other channels might be offering was. In particular, THE MACHINIST always struck me as creepy and a bit spooky. The sight of Christian Bale - whose infamous weight loss became the movies' driving reputation - is a scary enough vision to keep me awake.

To add to the "thrill" of the evening the TVO public discussion forum opened up a page about insomnia (which happened to be our Halloween theme). The question posed by the moderator was whether or not insomnia or lack of sleep could be legitimately used as a defense against a crime. That the topic switched from alibis to the virtue of the movies aired (INSOMNIA and THE MACHINIST) is not too surprising given that most people love to talk movies and nearly everyone has an opinion on them.

My apologiese to the moderator for contributing the sway from topic - I hope it doesn't prevent him from featuring other Saturday Night at the Movies themes and titles.

Richard Burton in a heap of trouble in John Le Carre's The Spy Who Came In From The Cold

But the attention to SNAM doesn't end there. The Agenda with Steve Paikin producer, Daniel Kitts, did ablog about Cold War film and asked which ones are the most entertaining, effective and/or accuarte. He interviewed yours truly and I gave my best shot at answering his questions. It resulted in a very sizeable response from their viewers. Check it out and add your remarks, or better yet, check it out then come back to THIS BLOG and add your remarks.

What I found interesting was that one movie that came up was John Le Carre's THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD. It just happens to be the movie showing this week along with the rarely seen THE DEADLY AFFAIR.

I did write an original blog for when we first aired the program where I outed my brother-in-law as a potential spy. Ironically he asked that his name and photo be removed. Now I'm even more suspicious of him. Enjoy.

The Lost Bones

Anyone who sees the scene in THE MACHINIST where Bale sucks in his stomach to reveal ALL of his ribs and doesn't find that terrifying/horrifying - and therefore a decent Halloween selection - may in fact be missing their fear bone. If you're looking for it, it's probably in the same place Mr. Ranty McRantster Christian Bale misplaced his funny bone.
