36 is an odd anniversary to celebrate. No round numbers, nothing you can divide by fives. But we, at Saturday Night at the Movies, choose to be anything but predictable. So celebrate we will with an opening special introducing our new season with a look back at our years of interviews and our priceless archive.
Are we proud? Absolutely. Am I thrilled to be hosting it? More than you might imagine - that is, more than anyone who doesn't work with me might imagine. Am I concerned that we are up against the Leafs vs. the Habs? Not really - it'll be a good game, but that's what recording devices are for. Besides, we've been up against Hockey Night in Canada for the same 36 years we're celebrating, and there's always been plenty enough room on the airwaves for both of us.
This special, simply called "36 Years of Conversation," will highlight some of the best interview moments throughout our career of bringing movies and opening up the dialogue about movies to the Ontario public. It's a treasure trove that belongs solely to Ontarians. Not to give too much away but you can expect to see the likes of Gregory Peck, Fay Wray, Frank Capra, Ronny Cox, Cybill Shepherd, some moments of musical spontanaety, insights and more than a few bloopers.
We think it's a pretty good way to start the season.
It's good to see Thom in front of the camera this time. Van will enjoy watching this episode...

Howdy,
Watched the show last night... Very good job by all "SNAM" team!!
Then watched "Thelma & Louise" and "Monster." Both excellent films... Had never seen "Monster" before but it is a very, very good movie...
Keep up the good work!
Ciao, Rainbow Randolph

Wow, I am now a dedicated fan of SNAM. My husband and I watched "36 Years" and enjoyed every moment. Husband then went to watch "the game" and I continued watching Thelma. Wonderful movie.
Thom Ernst is a competent, relaxed host - perfect for this show. I would love to see more of him!
Congratulations to all who created this!

I can count on one hand the number of television shows that can broadcast a 36-year retrospective and still point to proof of how they are creatively re-engergizing their format. Way to go SNAM! I'm with you as you enter early middle-age.
One request: let's have a on-camera host again. My vote is for Thom Ernst!
Oh yeah, more films about buildings and food. And amnesiacs.

Howdy,
Not sure there's a need for another host. After all, Elwy Yost left big shoes to fill as host... But Thom is good, and I liked Johanna Schneller when she was hostess. Still miss Elwy 'tho...

For a moment there - based on the title of your last post - I thought you were pitching Elwy's wife as a new host. Then I realized that would have to be Mrs. not Miss. Still.

P.S. As someone who never had the fortune to grow up with Elwy on SNAM (I didn't live in the country), and has only ever known the show as hostless, I do think it would be nice to have a face associated with the show a la The Agenda. But that's just me.

Awesome.
I am very excited to see this. SNAM has so many wonderful interviews from every type of person in the business. I'm so proud that we have a program that doesn't focus solely on the actors but interviews directors, producers, writers, the list goes on...
Congratulations Saturday Night At The Movies on 36 fantastic years. Here's to 36 more...and then some.
