Tony finally speaks up on ACTA

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSzpHI5ZRO0

Tony's response basically boils down to:

"...anything that goes on in ACTA is completely subservient to what we as Parliamentrians decide on this issue."

Question Period ACTA Transcript Pt 1

Charlie Angus, MP, Timmins-James Bay, ON, NDP: Thank you, Mister Speaker. Well, the European Union has leaked details of the secret ACTA negotiations in Korea, and guess what? It's exposed the Industry Minister's so-called public consultations on copyright as a total sham, because ACTA will deep-six Canada's ability to establish copyright policy; further, it'll strip thousands of citizens from the right to even use the Internet under the idiotic "three strikes and you're out" policy. Now, this government has no right to ne... mandate to negotiate away our domestic copyright laws. So will the Minister table in this House the mandate letter that was given to the negotiators to start the ACTA talks.

Tony Clement, MP, Parry Sound-Muskoka, ON, Conervative Party, Minister of Industry: With ACTA, Mister Speaker, despite the honourable member's, uh, fearmongering, the Government of Canada has not, uh, adhered to or agreed to anything in the ACTA negotiations. The ACTA negotiations are, in fact, subservient to any legislation that is put forth in this House. Mister Speaker, in good faith, myself and my colleague, the Honourable Minister of Heritage, went out, talked to the people of Canada, talked to stakeholders about a future copyright bill, and we are proud of the fact that we have had that consultation, because we got some good ideas, even from some NDPers.

Question Period ACTA Transcript Pt 2

(It says Max 4000 chars, but I can only post 2000 per post... odd.) Charlie Angus, MP, Timmins-James Bay, ON, NDP: Well, Mister Speaker, the ACTA provisions read like a wishlist for the U.S. corporate lobby, because it'll override any flexibility for WIPO, it will gut our domestic copyright policies, it'll criminalize thousands of Internet users through the "three strikes" provision. Now Canada needs a Minister who is willing to stand up for the innovation agenda, not a Minister who is acting like a handpuppet for the U.S. Embassy. So why won't the minister table the ACTA negotiation so that we can open it to public scrutiny?

Tony Clement, MP, Parry Sound-Muskoka, ON, Conervative Party, Minister of Industry: Speaker, if he wants to read more about it, he can go to Michael Geist's website. The, uh, the fact of the matter is, Mister Speaker, anything that goes on in ACTA is completely subservient to what we as Parliamentrians de... decide on this issue. Those are the facts, and the fact of the matter is, we have gone further in making sure that the public is aware of the issues involved in the copyright renewal and reform than any other government, and we are proud of that record.

Thanks for the transcript NerdOfAllTrades:

Charlie Angus asked it again:

So why won't the minister table the ACTA negotiation so that we can open it to public scrutiny?

The fact that Michael Geist has been doing a great job informing Canadians of leaked ACTA information does not absolve our government of their responsibilty to the electorate.

Mr. Clement has access to a large taxpayer funded website. Why is the Ministry of Industry not using this to tell us what they are really doing at ACTA?

ACTA and my MP

Jessie,

I wrote my MP, the Honorable Ted Menzies, to raise the issue of the ACTA treaty, he commented that he passed my question to the Honorable Stockwell Day as "the minster responsible for trade negotiations on intellectual property, he is best suited to comment on this particular issue."

Might be time to switch the interview request from Tony to Stockwell then...

Oh Dear...

Given my general dislike of FOX news anyway, I think I would actually benefit from them being taken off of every search engine I would ever use.

However, the internet is more structured than we like to think. The problem with saying that is because FOX news is simply itself under a bigger umbrella. A past experience has proven to me that Newscorp is a pretty big empire, and maybe a little bigger than we'd like to think. I don't think we'll be able to really anticipate what will be Bing-only from now on.

Old media silliness

This is a bit surprising. Not that Fox news is willing to stab itself in the head on its quick exit from relevance, but that Microsoft would be so willing to publicly admit that it is an old-media company.

I haven't tried Bing (only heard about it on podcasts), and this obviously won't provide an incentive (if anything, a disincentive).

I don't know that I've noticed being sent to any Fox news stories, so I don't think this will have any impact on my life.
