Department of Film, York University

Course Instructors: Prof. Seth Feldman & Prof. Gillian Helfield

Course Description:

Hollywood Old and New is a fully online course that will discuss 12 programs of American feature films (with two films per program) being screened by TVOntario’s Saturday Night at the Movies.  The films cover a period from the mid-1940s to the 1980s and the object of the course will be to provide students with an understanding of some of the issues pertaining to American film during this period.  These issues include, but are not limited to: film noir, westerns, the depiction of violence, race, gender and history.  Students will also get a more general overview of Hollywood film and should come away from the course with the ability to discuss American feature filmmaking in a broader context.
