The Middle Ages -- it's often depicted as an era of fear and ignorance -- the tyranny of kings over long suffering peasants. It was also the era of the Crusades -- not exactly a hotbed of progressive ideas. However, in a new book, popular historian Thomas Cahill tells a different story. This is the latest in his Hinges of History series on the evolution of the modern western world. It's called Mysteries of the Middle Ages: And the Beginning of the Modern World.
