Fundraising at TVO

TVO is a member of Imagine Canada and the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Toronto Chapter, and adheres to both associations' Code of Ethics. When handling our donor's confidential information, including credit card or other personal information, TVO Donations strictly adheres to government regulations and industry standards.

Canada Revenue Agency Tax Receipts

A tax receipt for the full amount will be issued for all charitable gifts made to TVO.

Tax receipts for one-time donations are mailed within six to eight weeks of processing.

Tax receipts for donors who contribute by postdated cheques or monthly withdrawals from a credit card or bank account are mailed early in the calendar year.

If you make a one-time donation online, an electronic tax receipt will be emailed to you within a 24-hour period after your donation is submitted and approved.

Donors who submit a donation online and request a tax receipt to be mailed by Canada Post will receive it within six to eight weeks.

Donors who make monthly donations will receive a tax receipt by mail early in the calendar year.

  1. Is TVO a registered charity?

    TVO is a registered charity with the Canada Revenue Agency. TVO's charitable registration number is 85985 0232 RR0001.

  2. How do I make a donation to TVO?

    There are four (4) simple, fast ways to make a financial gift to TVO:

    1) Online - You can donate online right here using our secure online donation form;

  3. Is your website secure?

    Yes our website is secure. Transferring data is made via a secure connection, conducted within a firewall and therefore secure from outside probes, and, to the extent it is maintained by TVO, resides on TVO's secure servers. When you use your credit card on our website to make a donation, your credit card number is stored in an encrypted fashion.

  4. I want to donate, but do not want to give my credit card information over the phone. What are my options?

    If you feel uncomfortable giving your credit card information over the phone, there are a number of secure options you can choose to make a donation to TVO. In addition to donating online, you can call a TVO Customer Relations to request that a donation form be mailed to you. You can choose either to fax or mail this donation form directly to TVO Donations.

  5. How is my credit card information stored?

    TVO does not store credit card information on-site or with your personal account in our database. All credit card transactions are handled through a secure vendor approved by the major credit card companies. When you make a gift to TVO on your credit card, your credit card information is encrypted and is not accessible to TVO staff, or our call centre operators.   6. I received a telephone call from someone claiming to work for TVO. Is this a legitimate call?

    TVO uses the services of a telemarketing firm to regularly make calls on behalf of TVO. If you have a concern about a call you've received, please contact TVO Customer Relations at 416.484.2665 or 1.800.463.6886, or by email donations@tvo.org.

  7. Is TVO paying telemarketers to make solicitation calls?

    As one of our fundraising methods, TVO does use the services of a telemarketing firm to make solicitation calls on our behalf. There is a cost associated with making these calls and that cost falls within Canada Revenue Agency guidelines for charities.

  8. What does it mean to be an Evergreen Monthly Donor?

    Evergreen Monthly Donors make ongoing monthly donations through a credit card or bank account. This method of giving provides a stable funding base for TVO. It reduces our impact on the environment by decreasing our mailings and by doing so, our consumption of paper and ink. It also enables more of your donation to go directly to meaningful initiatives by reducing costs associated with mailings.

  9. I have a new credit card expiry date. How can I update my payment information?

    When your credit card company issues you either a new credit card number and/or expiry date, please contact TVO Customer Relations with your new information, including your credit card number and new expiry date. TVO does not store credit card information on-site or with your personal account in our database. All credit card transactions are handled through a secure vendor approved by the major credit card companies. When you make a gift to TVO on your credit card, your credit card information is encrypted and is not accessible to TVO staff, or our call centre operators.   10. Does TVO accept gifts of securities?

    TVO accepts the transfer of securities with the aid of your broker and through RBC Dominion Securities. A tax receipt is issued for the value of the securities at the time of the transfer.

  11. When can I expect a tax receipt?

    Tax receipts for one-time donations are mailed within six to eight weeks after processing your donation. If you make your donation on-line, you have the option of receiving a tax receipt via email within 24 hours, or via Canada Post within six to eight weeks after processing your donation.

    Tax receipts for donors who contribute to TVO through our Evergreen Monthly giving program by post dated cheques or monthly are mailed early in the calendar year.

  12. Why do you share my name with other organizations?

    To minimize costs associated with list purchasing, TVO sometimes exchanges mailing lists with other charitable organizations. If you prefer TVO not to exchange your name with other organizations, please contact TVO Customer Relations at 416.484.2665 or 1.800.463.6886, or by email at donations@tvo.org.

  13. I registered for the National Do Not Call List. Why are you still calling me?

    Registered charities are exempt from buying and using the National Do Not Call Registry. The exemption was granted to those charities that have registered charitable status by the legislature. TVO is a registered charitable organization. Our registered charitable number is 85985 0232 RR0001.

  14. How can I register for TVO's internal Do Not Call List?

  15. Why am I receiving duplicate mailings from TVO Donations?

  16. What are TVO email alerts and how can I sign-up to receive them?

    TVO email alerts are sent the last week of each month and provide highlights of TVO programming for the coming month. We include a link to our website where you can download a schedule of the next months programming.

    As well, we'll occasionally send you an email with information about TVO that we think you'll find interesting and informative.

  17. My tax receipt isn't for the full amount of my donation. Why?

    If you are an Evergreen Monthly donor you will receive one tax receipt early in the calendar year for the sum total of all your monthly gifts in the previous year. For any additional one-time gifts you make to TVO, you will receive a tax receipt for each gift.

  18. I called TVO to make a donation and spoke with someone located in the U.S. Why is that?

    TVO Donations does use the services of a U.S.-based in-bound telemarketing vendor. This vendor has a call centre in Kingston, ON, and TVO calls are normally routed through that centre. If those lines are busy, calls are then re-routed through the U.S. location.

  19. I donated less that $20 and did not receive a tax receipt. Why?

    Donations of less than $20 are generally not receipted, helping to keep costs down on processing, printing and postage. However, should you require a tax receipt for your gift of less than $20, TVO would be happy to fulfill your request.
